A tribute to Oslo, Norway
My heart trembles when I think of the deadly terrorist attack in Oslo on Saturday, 23rd July 2011 which killed a total of 93 people. Why Norway out of all the countries in the world? As described by a German Newspaper "Even in their deepest sorrow the Norwegians don’t get hysterical. They resist the hate. It’s amazing to see how politicians and the whole country reacts. They’re sad to the deepest thread of their souls. They cry in dignity. But nobody swears to take revenge. Instead they want even more humanity and democracy. That’s one of the most remarkable strengths of that little country."
I wanted to write about this incident as one of my closest friend in RMIT University is a Norwegian. I got to know him last year but not once did he depict any signs of hatred, jealous, anger or disappointment towards me or anyone we both know. He is always calm and has the most adorable smile. And ever since then I am in love with the country and their people.
On one end I am glad that the gunman was not a Muslim. This makes people think more openly and not blame one type of a group. It makes us realise that stereotype is not the right way to go. There are disturbed people that come from America, Australia, Pakistan, India, China and other parts of the world and this tragedy tells the world exactly that.
