THE FIRST WOMEN TO BE HUNG IN PAKISTAN
LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN
To President Asif Zardari,
Once being a proud Pakistani, today I am ashamed to call Pakistan my home country. In fact, I feel better when people in Australia recognise me as an Indian rather than a Pakistani. The country is filled with people who have no mind, mercy, honesty and humanity. I am tired of people judging others, and inflicting peer pressure. I used to get physically abused for not wanting to cover my head in Pakistan. There is no such thing as freedom of speech and the right to live the way an individual wants to.
I am a Muslim, but am not at all satisfied by the ruling against Asia Bibi. I do not know whether she disregarded our Holy Prophet or not but I do know how our prophet would have reacted to this situation. Most Muslims would have heard the story in the Hadiths about the Christian women who used to verbally abuse the Holy Prophet and throw garbage on him every time he passed her way. Every single day the Prophet passed by calmly and did not retaliate against the Christian woman. One day when the Prophet passed by the same route, the lady was not there to throw garbage at him. This took him by surprised and he went to visit her just to realise she was ill that day. This is Islam. It is about peace and harmony, respect and forgiveness, joy and love.
I appeal from the bottom of my heart to please change Pakistan for the better. The country where Muslims, Hindus and Christians live together in peace. This is not impossible. Please stop my growing hatred for my own country. Stop the hanging of Asia Bibi.
Regards,
Fatimah Tariq
